Your first chat, step by step

From choosing a nickname to leaving a conversation: here is how the actual Chatuw controls work, what they mean, and what to try when something goes wrong.

By the Chatuw team · Updated October 24, 2026

1. Choose what others see

Start on the home page. Choose a nickname between 2 and 20 characters, your age, gender, country, and state or region when one is listed. You must be 18 or older. Use a nickname that does not match your work email or public social handle. Other chat participants can see your basic profile details; a nickname is not identity verification.

The location controls offer automatic detection and manual selection. Detection can be inaccurate when you use a VPN or mobile network. If the suggested country or region is wrong, select it yourself. Do not put your street address in your nickname or messages.

Choose “Start Chat Now” and complete the verification step if prompted. This checks the session for automated abuse; it does not verify someone’s identity or age. You do not need an email address, password, paid subscription, or a download to try the browser chat.

2. Choose a conversation

On desktop, the people list sits beside the conversation. On a phone, open a person from the list and use Back to return. Search lets you narrow the list by nickname and the available age, gender, and country filters. Start with broad filters if you see few results. Selecting a country for your own profile does not restrict every conversation to that country.

Availability changes over time, and the total refreshes periodically. Being available does not guarantee a reply. Profile ages and locations are not identity-checked.

Send one short message that gives the other person something easy to respond to. For example, “I’m choosing a film for tonight—comedy or mystery?” works better than sending several greetings in a row. Try the conversation starter tool for topic ideas. If someone does not reply, choose another conversation without pressuring them.

3. Understand a temporary session

Chatuw remembers some session and preference information in your browser. This can restore parts of your experience when you return on the same device, but it is not a permanent account or a guaranteed message backup. Clearing browser data, using a private window, changing devices, or a server restart can interrupt access to earlier conversations.

Log out when you finish on a shared device. Do not rely on a nickname to reserve your identity or to find the same person later. “Private 1-on-1” describes who sees the conversation in the chat interface; it does not promise end-to-end encryption or that the recipient cannot save what you send. Service and moderation systems may process messages and images.

4. Share photos carefully

Image sharing may stay locked until both participants have exchanged messages. Wait for a reply and follow the explanation beside the image control. If uploading fails, check your connection and try a smaller supported image instead of repeatedly pressing Send.

Check the preview for faces, documents, home details, and other people before you confirm. A disappearing image leaves the chat view after its timer; it cannot prevent a screenshot, copying, or retention in moderation storage. Send only content you have permission to share. Illegal, exploitative, and non-consensual content is prohibited.

5. Break the ice with Game Time

When the controller button is available in a conversation, open Game Time and choose a game. You may need to exchange a message each before an invitation unlocks. With another person, wait for them to accept; an invitation is not a promise they will join. You can cancel it and return to chat.

Four in a Row uses alternating turns: choose a column and try to connect four pieces before your opponent. Type or Die is a typing game. Use the sound control to mute game audio, and close the game panel when you want to return to the conversation.

When something does not work

Verification keeps loading
Check your internet connection, allow the verification widget to load, and try again. A content blocker may prevent it from running. If it still fails, note the browser and time and contact support. Do not share a verification token.
The people list is empty
Clear restrictive search filters and allow the list to reconnect. Availability varies, so try again later if your preferred filters show no results.
A message stays on “Sending”
Check whether the connection has dropped. Avoid resending repeatedly, which can create duplicates after reconnecting. A recipient may have left or blocked the conversation; a new browser session will not repair that thread.
I received a safety warning or temporary ban
Read the reason and any end time shown. Stop the behavior described rather than repeatedly retrying. For a suspected mistake, send support the approximate time, nickname, and warning text. Safety, privacy, and contact pages remain available during a restriction.

For unwanted contact, open the block control in the conversation header and confirm. For a safety report, use Contact with the nickname, time including your timezone, and a brief description. Read the safety guide for examples of scams and reporting details. Support will never need your password or a payment to read a report.
